







MCS - Computing Support Resources
The computing support for faculty, staff, and students is offered by:
- highly qualified support personnel;
- online documentation through departmental support sites:
The computing support personnel consists of:
- a group that provides MCS-wide services;
- departmental support staff (please see the departmental support sites).
Support procedure:
- the departmental support staff should be contacted for most routine problems;
- the
MCS group can be contacted directly for special services (listed
below), or during crisis (emergencies, not enough local resources) .
The MCS group seeks to provide highly specialized services to all the
members of MCS. The main types of services presently offered are:
- Unix and Linux system administration, software configuration, custom distributions including upgrades and backup;
- Parallel cluster budgeting, design, building, administration;
- Assistance for scientific programming and parallel algorithms;
- Consulting and coordination of computing components of scientific projects;
- Hardware purchase recommendations and planning;
- Hardware configuration and building of custom special purpose computers/servers;
- Special purpose software services and webservers;
- PC spare parts cache (for emergencies);
- Assistance with computing infrastructure budgeting;
- Quick assistance with any odd or urgent computer related problem.
The services of the MCS group are free of charge for the end users and can be restricted as requested by the Departments.
